KOALA FACT SHEET
STAGE ONE (Kindy and Year One)
Habitat
Wild koalas only live in Australia.
Koalas eat only gum leaves.
Koalas live in gum trees.
Without gum trees they will have no home or food.
Appearance
Koalas have soft grey fur.
Koalas have a big black nose. (which can sniff out the best leaves to eat or warn them of danger).
Koalas are good, strong climbers.
Babies
Baby koalas live in their mothers’ pouch. (until they are big enough too ride on her back)
Diet
Koalas in the Northern Rivers of NSW like Tallow wood, Forest Red and Swamp Mahagony gum leaves best.
We must not cut down koala food trees!!
Enemies
Too many koalas die every year from dog attack or hit by cars. Living near people is dangerous for koalas.
Koalas have to watch out for powerful owls or wedge-tailed eagles in the tree tops.
Behaviour
Koalas sleep during the day. They feed and move around at night.
Koalas ‘talk’ to each other with soft grunts, clicks, squeals or loud bellowing. Each sound has a different meaning.
How to Help
Keep dogs inside or tied up at night.
Plant koala food trees.
Don’t’ knock down koala food trees. Koalas need a place to live.
