Comet

Comet came into care with Friends of the Koala after falling a great height, around 20m, down onto a tar road during a storm in Federal. He was 725g at the time and would have been emerging from his mums pouch. There was no mum in sight and concerns he may have injured himself during the fall so he was brought into care.

A full vet assessment at the Australian Wildlife Hospital showed no obvious injuries so he was placed in home care. Comet was paired up with other koalas of a similar size. Koalas are always hand raised in pairs or small groups to prevent them being humanised and they do much better in care with a buddy of their own size and species.

Comet was transferred to his pre release site in March where he could learn what it was like to climb a real gum tree, blow around in the branches in the wind and know what rain and storms feel like. He coped extremely well and the gate was opened a couple of weeks later to allow him to come and go from his pen to the wild as he wished. Several weeks later he was still hanging around in the trees of his release area doing well.
