We are a nation of volunteers. More than 5.2million Australians volunteer, a little fewer than half of them in NSW. We have a Minister for Volunteering and a peak body, The Centre for Volunteering. The saga of Koala’s nomination for Federal listing as vulnerable to extinction under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 continues. As we understand it the Threatened Species Scientific Committee completed its eligibility assessment and provided its advice to Minister Burke on 30 September 2010. The Minister has 90 business days from that date in which to make and announce his decision. With all the rain over Christmas there is plenty of time to read the December 2010 issue of Treetops online. Treetops is the newsletter of Friends of the Koala. The December 2010 issue includes information and stories on Regional Volunteer Awards, Koalas and the Dogs and Companion Animals Act, Urban Koala Radio Tracking Study, Fieldwork with Steve Phillips as well as the usual Coordinator Reports and Statistical summaries.
