Second Koala to be Radio Tracked

Ashley is the second koala to be released with a radio tracking collar. He is part of a radio tracking study involving Friends of the Koala, Lismore City Council and Southern Cross University. The study will help to determine how koalas are coping and moving around in Lismore's urban areas and how koalas rehabilitated by Friends of the Koala cope post release.

Ashley was found crossing a major road in Goonellabah, an urban area of Lismore. He was given a veterinary check at the Australian Wildlife Hospital confirming he was a fit and healthy, young male of 3-4 years of age. He was fitted with a collar and given the all OK for release.

Ashley was released into a park next to where he was found crossing the road. He has since moved the short distance back up to trees lining the road and has crossed twice in the last week. Maybe he has some sense as he is crossing nearby to where a road sign indicates 'Koalas Cross Here'.

Ashley will wear his collar for a year while being regularly tracked by Friends of the Koala volunteers.
