Brendan

Brendan being fedBrendan was hit by a car on the Bruxner Highway near Alstonville in November 2004. He suffered severe head trauma resulting in the complete loss of one eye and the loss of most of his eyesight in the other. He was only 2 years old at the time, a beautiful healthy young male. Brendan took to captivity extremely well as he is very gently and relaxed in his nature.

FOK applied to NPWS for permission to keep Brendan as a permanant care koala at the Care Centre. It is very difficult for a blind koala to survive in the wild, especially a boy who has become blind at the age he would normally be dispursing and finding his own territory. It was therefore not possible for Brendan to be released back into the wild. NPWS granted FOK permission to keep Brendon.

Brendan a blind koalaBrendan was a definate favourite of all the carers in the Care Centre. He was there for 5 years and had a huge personality. He loved the supplement of paste he received each day and also his leaf although he could be fussy about it at times.

Sadly Brendan lost his battle with Retrovirus in April 2009. This disease is one of the most common effecting koalas in our area and desperately needs more funds for further research.
