Brendan

Brendan being fedBrendan was hit by a car on the Bruxner Highway near Alstonville in November 2004. He suffered severe head trauma resulting in the complete loss of one eye and the loss of most of his eyesight in the other. He was only 2 years old at the time, a beautiful healthy young male. Brendan took to captivity extremely well as he is very gently and relaxed in his nature.

FOK applied to NPWS for permission to keep Brendan as a permanant care koala at the Care Centre. It is very difficult for a blind koala to survive in the wild, especially a boy who has become blind at the age he would normally be dispursing and finding his own territory. It was therefor not possible for Brendan to be released back into the wild. NPWS granted FOK permission to keep Brendon.

Brendan a blind koalaBrendan is a definate favourite of all the carers in the Care Centre. He has been there for so long and has a huge personality. He loves the supplement of paste he gets every day and needs to check out the smell of any new arrivals, especially if they are boys. He also loves his leaf although he can be fussy about it at times.

Generally he has a run to himself. Occasionally he has the compay of other disease free koalas who are being prepared for release.
